Reporter takes kid for the day, lives

They say you never forget your first time. But what they don't tell you is, when you're a reporter, you publish a minute-by-minute account of your first time for everyone's inspiration and amusement. And, of course, to score macho points for your achievement.

At least that's what Scott Barancik did when he spent his first full day alone, taking care of his 3-month old daughter. As his entertaining account reveals, he survived, barely, but doesn't yet seem able to get enough distance from his adventure to draw many larger lessons.

Let me take a stab at it, Scott: 1) learn early on how to distinguish the kid's various cries. 2) know the kid's routine, either by watching, asking, or participating in it. 3) 15.5 ounces? Either your kid's still hungry, or mine is a piglet. And the big one, 4) there's no motherly secret to taking care of a kid; it just takes time and attention. And several changes of shirts.

So congratulations on surviving a day. As RebelDad rightly pointed out, though, you ain't seen nothin' yet, buddy.
